DDRC Built an Award Winning Internal Comms Program

Internal communications is a challenge. Especially for those organizations with tiny teams and big hurdles – like a workforce that’s mostly out in the field. The Developmental Disabilities Resource Center (DDRC) built a great employee communications program. So great, that they earned the International Association of Business Communicators Golden Quill award.

DDRC provides services for people with developmental disabilities. DDRC staff meets with them in their homes or wherever they may be. In addition to keeping staff aware of what’s going on within DDRC, the communications team wanted to make it easier to for staff to share timely information about where they are and where they are needed.

Their intranet has also become an employee resource in crisis times. For example, when Calgary flooded last summer, they were able to to make sure that their staff members were safe, informed and able to share up to date information with their clients and one another. This worked because it was easy for the communications team and field staff to post news and using their mobile phones.

Kate Kerr and Kaitlin Brown – the DDRC communications team – were really pleased with the award. They are understandably proud that their communications program was able to reach levels of effectiveness that other, larger, better-funded organizations hadn’t. They’ve managed to activate not just their own, but a wide variety of voices in the organization, and make it feel like a cohesive, connected whole. Well done, DDRC.
